The National Curriculum in both key stages addresses some issues relating to reproduction and sexual matters and these are therefore addressed during normal classes. The Governors’ Policy on Sex and Relationship Education states that children’s questions on sexual matters are answered honestly and openly at a level appropriate to the individual’s age and understanding.
In addition, lessons are given on sex and relationship education in Year 5/6. The context of these lessons stresses the importance of the family and stable, loving relationships. The lessons are led by the class teacher and may include an input from the school nurse. Lessons are supported by age-appropriate learning materials.
Parents have the opportunity to view these materials before they are used and have the right to withdraw their children from the sex education lessons provided in Y5/6.
